Etna Trekking

A hiking path through nature, going from beathtaking woods to desert lavic landscape, where you will admire poplars, beeches, birches, chestnuts, oaks and pine trees from the south and the south east face of Etna.

During the walk it will be possible to see some of the typical fauna of the volcano as well, just like buzzards, hawks, eagles, foxes, wild rabbits and much more.

The cost includes: Private Suv (return), multilingual guide, trekking shoes (only on request), the kit for visiting the cave

From Rifugio Sapienza you can take the cableway (2.500 m) or the cableway + jeep (3.000 m) to reach the top of the mountain.

The rocky necropolis of Pantalica is one of the most impressive Unesco's world heritage. sites in Sicily but also one of the most difficult to reach. It's a prehistoric archaeological site, belonging to the late bronze age (13th - 8th century B.C.) and it contains a huge rocky cemetery consisting of thousand of graves digged in the walls of the Anapo canyon.The tombs are overhanging the Anapo valley. Pantalica is worthy a visit also for it's wild natural panoramas. The whole area is inside the Anapo valley nature reserve, a paradise for trekking and hiking with a lot of different pathways. Pantalica is the plateau over the canyons formed by the creeks Anapo, Bottigliera and Calcinara. This small rivers have digged impressive rocky walls: a great panorama but also a good defended position for the ancient populations of Sicily. It's possible to arrive to Pantalica from two different ways: from the little village Ferla or from Sortino. Both villages are in the province of Syracuse, in southeastern Sicily. If you have only few hours to visit Pantalica, we suggest to arrive there through Ferla because the way arrives nearby the main archaeological ruins. The pathway departing from Sortino is very beautiful but a long walk is necessary to arrive e.g. near the anaktoron, the "palace of the prince". The way to Pantalica is interesting and very panoramical but pay attention to the many curves and take care that you have to drive about 1 hour and more from Syracuse. Pantalica is an Unesco site but sadly there's not a great organization for visitors. You can find postcards or to drink or eat in Ferla or Sortino or in the Agriturismo restaurants near Pantalica. What are the main monuments of Pantalica? The site is famous for its rocky necropolis. The prehistoric tombs are digged around the walls of the plateau, sometimes in impressive locations. Some of them can be reached by foot. The tombs look like little regular, artificial caves with one or more rooms. The many finds (pottery, bronze tools, bones) are exhibited in the sector "A" of the archaeological museum "Paolo Orsi" of Syracuse. In the highest point of the plateau are also the ruins of the anaktoron. Probably it was the palace of the chief of Pantalica or a religious building. The megalithic rocks are impressive and remember the ancient Mycenean constructions in Greece.

In Pantalica it's also possible to see medieval ruins, e.g. some rocky oratories of byzantine age. The best season to visit Pantalica is spring due to the mild temperatures and to the incredible colors of the Sicilian countryside. In summer it is very hot and there are very few shadow spots so we suggest to visit the area only soon in the morning or before sunset.

The Cyclops Riviera lies northeast of Catania and stretches for 9 miles along the eastern coast of Sicily encompassing the fishing villages of Acicastello, Acitrezza. The area is frequented by locals and tourists who are drawn to its views out across the Ionian Sea and a small archipelago of islands including Lachea, and its pretty coastline populated by hand-painted fishing boats in small inlets that makes it an ideal spot to catch the sunset or wander along the seafront eating an ice cream, even in winter. It also attracted Italian film director Luchino Visconti, who shot his Neorealist movie "La Terra Trema" (The Earth Trembles) at Acitrezza in 1948, using local Sicilian-speaking fishermen as actors. Continuing , we will visit , Acireale . Second most populous city of the province , is known for its carnival , for the Baroque and for its thermal baths . Near Etna , it includes in its territory a number of villages with small harbor , including Santa Maria la Scala and Capo Mulini . It is said that Acireale and other Aci drew its origin from Xiphonia , a mysterious Greek city now all but disappeared . The poets Virgil and Ovid made up the myth of the foundation of the love story of Aci and Galatea , killed out of jealousy by the cyclops Polyphemus . In Roman times the same territory was born a town called Akis , and that historically participated in the Punic Wars . In the Middle Ages the village consolidated around the castle of Aci and only in the fourteenth century about ten families moved further north , the birthplace Aquilia ( Aci Eagle ) or Aquilia Nuova, the first stable point of today's city . The sixteenth century was very important for New Aquilia , where consolidated a strong merchant class that brought considerable wealth to the city and settled several corporations and religious orders , leaving an indelible imprint so that even today is often referred to as "the city of a hundred bells ."

Catania is a city with many faces, offering visitors a plethora of emotions thanks to the city’s fantastic architecture and history. Recently, the city’s baroque buildings have become part of the UNESCO’s “World Heritage”. Moreover, Catania also offers a great deal in terms of art, culture, and nightlife. The city’s history goes back to the 8th Century B.C.E., when it was founded by Greek settlers. The city then became part of the Roman Empire, and later Byzantine, followed by the Arabs, Normans, Swabians, and the vast number of other dominions that ruled in Southern Italy up until the unification of the country. Some of the city’s treasures that survived the terrible earthquake of 1693 can now be found underneath or just above the level of the modern city: a Roman amphitheater and forum, Roman baths, a Byzantine chapel and a balcony from the 1400’s, all in the city center. Almost hidden between Baroque buildings, you can find the ancient theatre. The Ursino Castle, however, is pretty much completely visible – full of the glory it has held the Swabian reign. Among those monuments that rise up from the 17th century city, you will enjoy the sight of the Roman thermal baths of the Rotonda and the Norman Apses of the Saint Agatha Cathedral. Your visit to the historical center of Catania will be a head-turning walk through baroque streets, such as Via Crociferi – where five baroque churches run along a street of just a few hundred meters – and a dive down (literally speaking) into the Roman and Medieval past of this beautiful city. The baroque architecture can be truly appreciated with a walk through Duomo (Cathedral) square, and also along two streets – Via Vittorio Emanuele and Via Garibaldi. In addition to the historical neighborhoods, which were once surrounded by city walls (now only partially visible), Catania offers Via Etnea, the three-kilometer street that runs up towards the “Mountain”, telling the story of historical architecture by notes of churches and palaces built over 300 years. You will also enjoy the beautiful “viali”, a number of streets with villas and buildings from styles between the late 1800’s and the early 1900’s, such as the noteworthy Sicilian “Liberty” style. At the end of the “viali” you’ll find fashionable stores and shopping areas, and finally the seaside road, with a boardwalk running along the black lava cliffs and the blue sea, telling the story of how eruptions from Mt. Etna reached so far as to dive into these beautiful waters.
